Katherine Legge has raced in just about every series possible during her 25-year journey in professional motorsports, ranging from dirt tracks to IndyCar. Even so, she doesn’t mind admitting to being nervous about potentially rubbing fenders with the likes of Joey Logano, Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell in her first NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday at Phoenix Raceway. Legge is set to become the first woman in a NASCAR Cup Series race since Danica Patrick made her final start in the Daytona 500 seven years ago. She’ll drive the No. 78 Chevrolet for Live Fast Motorsports.

Cadillac’s Formula 1 team has received official approval to join the grid in 2026 and its owners insist the team will be ready to compete. Although the grid expansion was approved last November, it was not until Friday that governing body FIA and Formula One Management said the Cadillac F1 effort meets all the requirements to become the 11th team in the series next season. The team will function out of locations in Silverstone, England, the Indianapolis area and in Concord, North Carolina. Team owners say they have a 2026 car built that has already been in the wind tunnel.

A bucktoothed llama that spends its days comforting chronically ill children at a North Carolina camp founded by NASCAR royalty has been crowned the world’s oldest llama in captivity. The Guinness World Records announced last week that at 27 years and 251 days, the selfie- and snuggle-loving llama called Whitetop has dethroned Dalai Llama. Whitetop was donated to the Victory Junction camp in 2006, just two years after race car driver Kyle Petty and his family founded the camp in honor of Petty's son, who was killed in a racing crash. Whitetop has become known for its relaxed, sweet and empathetic personality.

Connor Zilisch had a fiery NASCAR Cup Series debut. Literally. The 18-year-old's impressive weekend at the Circuit of the Americas ended early when he couldn’t avoid a spin by Trackhouse Racing teammate Daniel Suarez early in the final stage of Sunday’s race. The collision sent Zilisch hard into the tire barrier and the car caught fire as he climbed out. It was an unfortunate end to an otherwise impressive race weekend for a youngster who hopes to become the youngest winner in Cup Series history.

Will Power had a rough 44th birthday when he lost power in his car, brushed the wall during practice and had his hybrid engine changed before qualifying for IndyCar’s season-opening race. Then he failed to advance out of the first round of qualifying while teammates Scott McLaughlin and Josef Newgarden both did move on. Power will start 13th, while McLaughlin won the pole for Sunday’s race on the downtown streets of St. Petersburg. It's not the best way for Power to start what is the final season of his current Team Penske contract. He wants an extension.

Carson Hocevar seems intent on driving as aggressive as ever. After all, he was the runner-up in Atlanta for a career-best finish. It also prompted a week of criticism from some veteran drivers, and warnings not to make things harder on himself by making enemies on the track. Spire Motorsports’ 22-year-old driver has treated it all with a shrug and a promise to keep it going this weekend in NASCAR’s first road race of the season at the Circuit of the Americas. Tyler Reddick starts on the pole, and 18-year-old Connor Zilisch makes his Cup Series debut.

The Florida Man Games are back for Round 2, as teams from around the state gather to prove they have what it takes to join the ranks of the world’s worst superhero. Following last year’s inaugural Florida Man Games in downtown St. Augustine, organizers have moved Saturday’s event a few miles away to the St. Johns County Fairgrounds, where they expect to have room for more spectators and tailgating. Poking fun at the state’s reputation for bizarre stories, last year’s teams competed in Florida-themed events like the Evading Arrest Obstacle Course and Beer Belly Sumo Wrestling. New events added this year include Hurricane Party Prep: Grocery Aisle Brawl and Human Beer Pong.

Daniel Suarez led a quartet of NASCAR stars through the streets of Mexico City in search of a nightcap following a full day of showcasing his native country to his fellow competitors. It was part of an immersive experience ahead of NASCAR's planned first points-paying international Cup Series race in modern history. The June race announcement was initially met with excitement. But as the 2025 season has started there have been industry questions about security. But after Suarez showed Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney and Christopher Bell around the city, the quartet left Mexico City raving about the culture and the experience and created the messaging NASCAR hoped for.

IndyCar enters a new era with broadcast partner Fox Sports, which takes over the television rights after the series spent 16 years with NBC Sports. The season starts Sunday in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Fox has heavily promoted the season in a marketing boost IndyCar needs. Alex Palou is the two-time reigning IndyCar champion and Josef Newgarden is the defending two-time Indianapolis 500 winner. Colton Herta and Pato O'Ward are among the many drivers trying to dethrone them.

Christopher Bell believes he could be headed toward a big year with Joe Gibbs Racing following what he hopes will be a breakthrough win. Bell clinched a playoff berth by winning the NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway in overtime on Sunday. Bell said he would be disappointed if he doesn’t have more wins before the playoffs. Bell said he had high hopes for his No. 20 Toyota, beginning with next week’s race at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. He just didn’t expect his team’s breakout win to come in Atlanta.

Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter is creating a distinctly different atmosphere as this year's NFL scouting combine begins. Yes, he's coming to Indianapolis listed as a defensive back. But some also consider the former Colorado star the best receiver in this year's draft class. And he could work out at both positions this week, making him the most intriguing two-way prospect in combine history. The question is where does he fit best and will he work out at either or both positions this week.

Christopher Bell edged Carson Hocevar and Kyle Larson in overtime Sunday in another close NASCAR Cup Series finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Bell led only the final lap in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and had a slight edge on the outside when the caution light came on in overtime following a wreck by Josh Berry. The 30-year-old Oklahoma driver has 10 career Cup victories. Austin Cindric led in his Team Penske Ford before he and William Byron, the Daytona 500 winner last week, wrecked with three laps remaining, setting up the overtime. Kyle Busch finished seventh, ending his hopes of snapping a winless streak on the Cup Series. Busch won the Atlanta Truck Series race Saturday.

A massive fine left Chase Briscoe facing a huge points deficit heading into Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Even so, Briscoe insists he feels no new pressure. He says he already felt an urgency to win this week because those are the expectations at Joe Gibbs Racing, his new NASCAR home. Briscoe won the pole for last week’s Daytona 500 and then finished fourth before NASCAR announced on Wednesday its inspection found Briscoe used a modified spoiler in time trials. Joe Gibbs Racing was docked 100 driver/owner points and 10 playoff points and fined $100,000.

Parker Kligerman has lost his appeal after having his NASCAR Truck Series season-opening win at Daytona disqualified. NASCAR disqualified Kligerman’s No. 75 on Friday night when his truck was found to be too low in a postrace inspection. Corey Heim was declared the new winner. The appeal was denied by the National Motorsports Appeals Panel. The adjustment to the standings gave actor Frankie Muniz his first career top-10 finish. Kligerman is not entered in Saturday's Atlanta Truck Series race. He retired from full-time racing after last season. He has a larger role as a television analyst this year.

Owen Larson called it when he said his dad wouldn’t win the Daytona 500 because “he probably needs to try really hard because he’s not good at superspeedway racing.” The 10-year-old was right in his assessment. Kyle Larson can win just about anywhere in any type of car. But when it comes to Daytona and Talladega, NASCAR’s 2021 Cup Series champion is a disaster. Larson dropped to 0 for 22 at Daytona International Speedway when he finished 20th in Sunday night’s Daytona 500. Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman Jeff Gordon is a three-time Daytona 500 winner who believes the lack of success on superspeedways is “getting in his head.”

NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon wants a “Days of Thunder” sequel and said at Daytona International Speedway that he’s been in touch with Tom Cruise about making the project come to life. The Hollywood Reporter reported in November that Cruise had talked to Paramount about a follow-up to his 1990 NASCAR racing film. The original was a critically panned summer blockbuster that was largely lampooned throughout the NASCAR industry for its exaggeration and overindulgence. Gordon said he had talked to Cruise about another “Thunder” movie.

Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves got a crash course — literally — in stock-car racing at Daytona International Speedway. Castroneves was involved in a seven-car wreck on Lap 72 of the Daytona 500 and ended another race in a mangled mess of sheet metal. The former “Dancing with the Stars” winner also wrecked in a qualifying race Thursday and again as he crossed the finish line in the ARCA race Saturday.

Rain has stopped the Daytona 500 on Sunday after 11 laps, not long after President Donald Trump in his heavily armored presidential limousine known in Washington as “The Beast” led the drivers on two laps around the track. The caution flag came out with defending Daytona 500 champion William Byron out front. Rain started falling in turns one and two, the West side of the 2 1/2-mile Daytona International Speedway. Trump spoke to the drivers as he led them through several ceremonial laps.

Ford led the final Daytona 500 practice with Brad Keselowski pacing the field as he attempts to snap a 15-year winless drought Sunday in “The Great American Race.” Keselowski co-owns the Ford that went 193.307 mph in Saturday’s 55-minute final tune-up session. Only 24 of the 41 drivers practiced Saturday, with many choosing not to risk damaging their car ahead of NASCAR’s version of the Super Bowl. It was a strong session for Ford, which has shown it has the speed to match Toyota. But many of the 17 drivers who skipped the final practice were Toyota drivers, so the favorite is unclear.

Kyle Larson will try to snap a 0-for-11 skid in the Daytona 500, and The Associated Press will be embedded with his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports team. Daytona has never been good to Larson despite three poles. He is actually 0 for 21 in the Cup Series with nine Did Not Finishes, and his Daytona national series debut was terrible: Larson flew into the fence on the final lap of the 2013 Xfinity Series race and demolished his car. But Larson has started this year on a hot streak with wins in sprint cars in Australia, the Chili Bowl, and his first gator trophy at Volusia Speedway Park’s annual DIRTcar Nationals last week before he shifted into Daytona 500 preparations.

Martin Truex Jr. is trying to win the Daytona 500 in his 22nd attempt. The 2017 Cup Series champion is driving a one-off race for Tricon Garage. He will be in the No. 56 Toyota, a number that now has more meaning for Truex. A day after Truex formally announced his entry into “The Great American Race,” his father died unexpectantly at age 66. Truex Sr. drove the No. 56 for much of his racing career, which included 15 starts in the second-tier Xfinity Series and 135 starts in the ARCA Series in the 1990s. Now, Truex Jr. will try to get it to victory lane in NASCAR's premier event.

Corey LaJoie so badly wanted to race in the Daytona 500 that he gambled his children’s college fund to secure a seat in “The Great American Race.” LaJoie was let go last season from Spire Motorsports and closed out the year driving the final six races with Rick Ware Racing. Ware was willing to field a second car at Daytona International Speedway, but it would be with a driver who brought the financial funding. LaJoie has three sons, all born since 2020. He said he grabbed their college fund and turned it over to Ware to make sure another driver wouldn’t snag the No. 01 Ford before he could find sponsorship.

It’s NASCAR’s turn to throw its version of the Super Bowl with Sunday's Daytona 500. The “Great American Race” has Captain America coming and maybe even President Donald Trump. The field is stacked with stars, including four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves, who at age 49 is making his NASCAR debut. The start of the race has been moved up an hour, to 1:30 p.m. Eastern, with the threat of rain later Sunday. Pitbull is scheduled to perform the pre-race concert after his appearance was canceled last year because of rain.

Pitbull has ended his partnership with NASCAR team Trackhouse Racing. Pitbull is still scheduled to play the concert ahead of Sunday’s Daytona 500 as part of the race festivities that include “Captain America” actor Anthony Mackie set to serve as the grand marshal and give the command for drivers to start their engines. “Mr. Worldwide” joined Trackhouse as an ownership partner ahead of the race team’s debut in the Cup Series in the 2021 Daytona 500.

With the threat of rain looming, NASCAR moved up the start time one hour for Sunday’s Daytona 500 to 1:30 p.m. EST. Daytona International Speedway will open parking lots at 6 a.m. Due to increased security measures, Daytona International Speedway encouraged all fans to arrive early for the event.
