The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to terms with veteran left-hander Andrew Heaney on a one-year deal. The agreement is worth $5.25 million and is pending Heaney passing a physical. The 33-year-old Heaney is 51-62 with a 4.45 ERA during his 11-year career, mostly with the Los Angeles Angels. Heaney spent the last two seasons with the Texas Rangers, winning a career-high 10 games in 2023 while helping the Rangers win their first World Series. Heaney went 5-14 with a 4.28 ERA in 32 games in 2024. The Pirates were in the market for a lefty to join a starting rotation dominated by right-handers.

Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes is focused on becoming a more complete pitcher in 2024. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year says he spent the offseason tinkering with adding two new pitches to an arsenal that includes a fastball that regularly hits 100 mph. Skenes says the goal is to give hitters something else to think about when they step to the plate. The 22-year-old added that he's hoping to be more efficient during his second season and that he can earn the right to be the opening day starter when the regular season arrives in late March.

New Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz is expected to miss most of spring training after undergoing surgery on his right wrist. Horwitz, acquired in a trade with Cleveland in December, will be out at least 6-8 weeks. Pirates general manager Ben Cherington says while Horwitz remains a part of the team's plans in 2025, he did not put an exact timetable on a possible return. The 27-year-old Horwitz hit .265 with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs in 97 games with Toronto last season. The Blue Jays shipped him to Cleveland in December and hours later the Guardians sent him to Pittsburgh in exchange for pitcher Luis Ortiz and two prospects.

Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes is optimistic he's got a firm grasp on how to deal with the back problems that forced him to miss more than 60 games in 2024. The former Gold Glove winner spent most of the offseason working on strengthening his core to take some of the pressure off his back when he swings. Hayes hit a career-low .233 last season and had just 13 extra-base hits. Hayes he knows for the Pirates to contend he needs to return to the form he showed in 2023 when he was one of the best players at his position in the majors.

Outfielder Tommy Pham joined his 10th major league team, agreeing to a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates worth $4,025,000. The deal is pending Pham, who turns 37 next month, passing a physical. The signing is the most notable free agent acquisition by the Pirates, who have been relatively quiet during the offseason. Pittsburgh re-signed designated hitter Andrew McCutchen in December and signed second baseman/outfielder Adam Frazier in late January. The well-traveled Pham gives the Pirates another potential option to join Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz in the outfield. Pittsburgh is Pham’s 10th stop during his 11-year career.
