Venango County Historical Society, located at 307 South Park Street, is a nonprofit museum and historical society dedicated to the preservation of historical artifacts, documents and photos pertaining to Venango County. They provide educational and informational tours, programs and research opportunities to Venango County residents.
Throughout 2024, they revamped and improved their museum’s exhibits and interpretative displays. They have been busy inventorying their collection of Venango County photographs, maps and artifacts, and have been awarded grants to digitize their collection of photographs and early Venango County documents, with plans to share that work with the public.
In September, they brought in a part-time secretary and in November they hired a new executive director, Mr. Eric Cook.
They’ve also added new books to their selection of local history, including two wonderful new histories of early football: “The World’s Greatest Pro-Gridiron Team: The 1903 Franklin All-Stars” by Derin L. Hayes, and “Gridiron Legacy: Pro Football’s Missing Origin Story” by Gregg Fiery, forward by Franco Harris.
While the historical society is closed for regular tours until May 1st, they are happy to accommodate tours or research requests in the meantime by appointment. They are busy preparing new displays in the museum and have a new slate of lectures, social events and fundraisers planned for 2025. Additionally, they are laying the ground works and currently fundraising for restoring the Old Garrison location on Elk Street in Franklin, as well as making improvements to their historic home and grounds. They will hold their annual book sale during Apple Fest from Oct. 3 through Oct. 5.
