The Friends of Oil Creek State Park (FOCSP), established in 2005, play a vital role in supporting and enhancing the park’s offerings. As a chapter of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF), a 501(c)(3) organization, FOCSP brings together funding and volunteer power to ensure the park thrives beyond the resources provided by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). Through hands-on workdays and strategic initiatives, the Friends group fosters a strong connection between the community and this natural gem.
Leadership for 2025
FOCSP is starting 2025 with a dedicated leadership team at the helm. Jen McAlevy continues her service as Chairperson, alongside Vice Chairman Rob McCall, Treasurer Laura Anna and Secretary Libby Culbertson. The board has also welcomed two new members: Tim Rudisille, a park enthusiast and photographer, and Northern Wincek, an avid hiker. Their fresh perspectives are expected to bring exciting new ideas to the group.
Other board members include Rebecca Beach, Rebekah Deal, Amy Douthett, Peter Fitzpatrick, Bruce Getsinger, John Kolojejchick, Heather Nelson and Kat Thompson. Together, they are planning new activities to further engage park visitors. The group meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6 p.m., and meetings are open to the public. For meeting locations and updates, visit their website at friendsocsp.org.
FOCSP would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Peg Sims, a longtime board member and former chair who ended her board service in 2024, for her years of dedication and hard work. Her contributions have left a lasting impact on the park and its community.
Volunteer impact
In 2024, under the leadership of board member Amy Douthett, FOCSP volunteers cleared and maintained the park’s cross-country ski trails. Efforts included three spring cleanup days and three fall workdays, ensuring the trails were ready for winter activities. More cleanup days will be scheduled in 2025.
The Over the Hill Gang
The Over the Hill Gang (OTHG), a dedicated group of volunteers supported by FOCSP, continues to maintain the park’s 37-mile Gerard Hiking Trail and the cross-valley trails. In 2024, the group saw a leadership transition, with Howard Wurzbacher stepping in to carry on the work of Denny Patterson. Every Wednesday (weather permitting), the Gang tackles tasks such as repairing and replacing bridges, clearing fallen trees, maintaining trail markings and splitting firewood for Adirondack shelters at Cow Run and Wolfkiel. They also help prepare (ungroomed) cross-country ski trails for the winter season.
New members are always welcome to join this hardworking crew. Interested individuals can contact the park office at 814-676-5915 for more information.
Enhancing the park
FOCSP has funded several projects to enrich the park’s environment. One highlight is the perennial wildflower and pollinator garden at the park office. This project, developed in partnership with the Penn State Master Gardeners of Venango County, saw significant expansion in 2024. Emily Pritchard, the park’s Environmental Education Specialist, plans to further enhance the garden in 2025 with features such as raised beds and greater plant diversity.
The Friends also provide critical support for trail maintenance by funding tools, materials and equipment for the OTHG. In 2025, the group, led by Peter Fitzpatrick, will explore grant opportunities to fund ADA-compliant projects, making the park more accessible and enjoyable for all visitors.
How to support
FOCSP’s many activities and projects are made possible through memberships, sponsorships and donations. Memberships start at $10 for individuals, $25 for families and $100 for groups and companies.
